Peter Drury, the Football Poet.
One of the greatest football commentators you are ever likely to listen to, Peter Drury's words encapsulate what the beautiful game is all about. His emotionalized sensationalization and poetic articulation of the English language - describes, narrates, and befits every little action on the football pitch, to the tee.
Football cannot possibly sound and feel any better, without the words of Peter Drury, which captivates, enthrals, enchants, and allures the global audience like nothing else can.
So let us put one of his greatest and most iconic speeches under the microscope and dissect the subtleties behind it, that makes it a work of art indeed!
When Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in 2021, after leaving the club back in 2009, the sheer plethora of emotions that surrounded and engulfed the occasion of his second debut in red, was evocatively put into words by Peter Drury, in the most electrifying and spine-tingling of ways.
This is how he introduced the phenomenon that is Cristiano Ronaldo, back to Old Trafford.
Madeira, Manchester, Madrid, Turin and Manchester again. Reeved in red. Restored to this great gallery of the game - a walking work of art. Vintage, beyond valuation, beyond forgery or imitation. Eighteen years since the trembling teenager of touch and tease, first tiptoed onto this storeyed stage; now in his immaculate maturity - CR7 Re-United!
The emotions and the feelings were there to be felt, but what makes Peter Drury's words even more of a fascination is his usage of the English language - the use of literary devices, wordplays, metaphors, imageries, and such other figures of speech.
Let us dissect the subtleties that were in play in the speech above.
Immaculate usage of alliterations.
The key element in the speech above is the way Peter deploys alliterations to enhance every sentence that he strings. Just look at the sheer number of alliterations produced in this short speech - "Reeved in red", "Great gallery of the game", "Walking work of art", "Vintage, beyond valuation", "Trembling teenager of touch and tease", and "Storeyed stage".
His verbal mannerism and choice of words make us live the occasion.
When Cristiano scores the first goal, who else is more befitting than Peter Drury to milk the occasion?!
And his words, indeed, make us feel.
"Close your eyes and he never went away."
The second goal scored by Cristiano, greeted by the roar of 75000 fans inside Old Trafford, is perfectly summed up by a clever and instinctive wordplay, making every United fan and football lovers in general, feel the exact emotion that was crying out to felt, in that moment in time.
As Old Trafford is also known as The Theatre Of Dreams, Peter Drury exclaimed:
"The theatre lives its dream!"
Indeed, its fascinating.
His words are beyond words.
When you have such a hold on the English language, it engages the listeners in the most enthralling and cliff-hanging way possible. Using such literary devices in your writings, enhances its inherent quality several notches up.
When I write, I always try to make use of such techniques and devices, wherever and whenever I possibly can.
Wordplay fascinates and allures me in a way like nothing else can.
In one of my posts titled - 'The Eudemonia of Writing' - my expression was built on the foundations of instinctive play of words, imageries, and alliterations.
I used phrases and words in such a way that it appeals to your poetic senses, particularly the phrases such as - "Cloud the sky of our minds", "Emotions are evocatively enchanted", "Articulately assembled", "Window of words", " A world wobbling with wonder and woes", "Territories of thoughts", "Empire of emotions", etc.
It goes without saying you can seamlessly identify and analyse the obvious imageries and alliterations deployed in my mode of expression. This plays a huge role in separating your work of art, from the artworks of others.
So go ahead, and play with words.
It is quite the game indeed!
