Poem: The Story Of The Year 2020

Updated: Aug 2, 2022

2020 - A year for the history books.

From taking countless lives to changing millions, 2020 did it all. Twelve months of unrelenting drama, from a microscopic agent of death going about decimating the mankind to untimely celebrity deaths and tragedies like never before, our experiences were frightening indeed.

Locked at our houses for almost the majority of it, of course our spirits were down. We prayed for better days. We waited for the light at the end of the long tunnel that 2020 took the shape of.

This poem sums up everything that the year 2020 stood for. The story of that year has been narrated in the form of poetry - describing each and every little event that was a part of it. If you want a 2020 recap - you are at the right place!

The Story Of The Year 2020

First of Jan – ‘twas the start of it all

If only we could foresee, oh what could befall!

Happy New Year! The celebrations went wild

As the decade was welcomed by every man and child!

It was a year unlike any other, the year had plenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!

The cold went away, as a virus made its way

It crept into our lives, and it was here to stay

We named it Corona; the world was in a shock

An unwelcomed guest – A new kid on the block

Panic and paranoia, the future was unclear

As the entire world started to tremble with fear

An unforeseen world, the year changed plenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!

World War III claims, the internet went crazy

Peace and humanity? The future seemed hazy

We went into lockdown, held captive at our homes

Attending our classes through laptops and phones

The nature went wild, it threw cyclones into the mix

Our already troubled lives were in serious need of a fix

It gave way to a new normal, the year broke plenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!

Australia was burning, the forests were ablaze

As the island continent prayed for better days

The Taal Volcano in Luzon suddenly erupted

And thousands of people had their lives disrupted

The Olympics were postponed, the Euros were cancelled

The sporting calendar was marred and dishevelled

Our lives changed forever, the year changed plenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!

Racism revelled with George Floyd’s death

And Black Lives Matter became a global protest

Kobe Bryant left us, what a legend of the game!

So did Maradona, what an inexplicable shame!

We lost Sushant Singh Rajput and Irfan Khan

Wakanda Forever? We lost Chadwick Boseman

We lost incredible gems, the year took away plenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!

A surge of locusts, it was quite an attack!

A sudden blast in Beirut had us taken aback

A passenger plane crashed just days before Eid

No soul survived — not a parent, not a kid

The Supreme Korean leader flirted with death

And Joe Biden became a presidential candidate

Some staggering events, the year had plenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!

The festive season came, but it wasn’t the same

Everything was half-spirited, the virus was to blame

It was a whole new world, a far cry from the past

Only a span of twelve months but the difference was vast

It was a hell of year; we waited for it to end

Twenty Twenty One should better be our friend

Tragedies, miseries, and setbacks aplenty

This is the story of the year, Twenty Twenty!
